Pet Food Awareness -Sift through the kibble
Crossposting (with permisssion) from the showdals list....
<<<<I don^1t want to be an alarmist, but I^1m posting this since Nutro is a
popular brand of dog food among Dal fanciers. I^1ve known Paul Miller for
about 10 years. He was working as a Nutro rep when we met him, and he has
always been very positive about Nutro food. He now owns a pet food store and
hasn^1t worked for Nutro for years, but he continued feeding Nutro to his own
dogs.
He believes there are problems with Nutro now; dogs are getting ill or dying
and Nutro is not acknowledging a problem - at least not yet. These issues
seem to have started in the last couple months (April & May 2008)- this
isn^1t from the 2007 pet food recall. Nutro is now part of Mars, and Paul
thinks becoming part of that conglomerate may be behind changes in the food.
If you feed Nutro, especially Lamb and Rice, you may want to follow the
posts below. The last link at the very bottom may be the most useful - I^1ll
put it here too: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html

From what I understand from 3 friends who work for the company, Nutro is having problems with their grains, rice, corn and soy, the sources are Chinese, or have been, and yes, I even know a Corgi breeder in Wyoming who lost 2 dogs. Her vet said they had to have been poisoned, renal failure took them. Careful necropsy pointed at their food. She contacted the company and they asked her to send them the remnants of the food she was feeding the dogs, she did, a few weeks later her vet called her to tell her all of her vet bills had been paid and then she got a check in the mail from some legal firm with a vagueletter about "settling" her issue though they were acknowledging no guilt, they were a compassionate company deeply concerned about the wellbeing of their consumers pets. If you look at the stores there are foods plain not on the shelves, and many stores have signs up saying they won't be getting more in until June or July. I stopped feeding Nutro about 7 years ago because my dogs didn't like it. In recent years several breeder friends who have fed Nutro for years have said recently the food hasn't smelled as good and their dogs aren't eating it well and their overall condition has gone down. Royal Canin was just bought by Mars too, so was "Greenies".
