Yeah I used to be a big time nutro supporter till I saw the articles, it's evidents its not just a food shipping or storage issue. Science Diet in my experience and opinion is not good in general because of the corn content, if your dealing with tummy upset I would use like baby food and white rice and chicken home made to help sooth.
It is certainly a concern with me if something were to happen with my animals I would be devastated, we recently had to put down our special needs kitty Wookie that has feline lukemia, Jim is her brother and lukemia free thankfully. I do wonder if the food did something to Wookie but everyone else has been fine but for a minor urinary tract infection in Spotted One, that resolved though the same day I borrowed $400 on my Dad's credit card to take him to the vet. He was FINE as soon as we got home but of course we had anti biotics and pain control and subQ fluids (oh he LOVED(not) those!), and the vet said with all her symptoms it was just her bone marrow stopped working. Wookie and Jim's family history is just tragic I could do a whole story on it!
Science Diet is a concern to me, had major recall issues and is not at all what it's cracked up to be, the vets get A LOT of kickback for using it and pushing it. SOME Rx formulas are valuable, but the CORN is just CRAP. Dogs and cats have simple stomach that CAN NOT digest corn. Period. Ground or not like the SD reps say makes its "good." Ultimately corn is sweet and cheap and it makes a good cheap filler.
Think about what your cat is, a carnivore, why would you feed a lion or tiger corn? You wouldn't! THink about the animals that eat corn naturally, cows, sheep, goats, horses. They all have either a multiple stomach system of 3 or 4 stomachs (Cow+Goats 4) or a specialized organ called the cecum that is specially suited to digest plant material.
Innova though is a GREAT food, I would switch to just Innova if I was you. I am going to go on Innova if I can as soon as these Canidae freebies are up or if there are issues I will be demanding they give me Innova for the Canidae. The best way to judge the quality of a dog or cat food is the first several ingredients, first you want to see a specific meat meal, be it chicken or fish or lamb. Meal means your meats cooked so when your kibble cooks you don't lose the fat and water in the meat and then your meat is actually ingredient #5. So if you see "turkey, chicken, etc" as #1 really thats ingredient #5. You also want to see NO by products as they may contain heads, feet, and intestines of the animal they were from. Meal comes from the meat you and I would eat ourselves. Paul says avoid glutens of any kind.
I hope you don't mind some good hearted education/preaching on this topic! I don't think you'd be here if you didn't want the absolute BEST for your babies. I know my education in pet nutrition has come a long ways since I fed whatever was cheapest that the cats liked at the grocery store.
Hi: i was feeding my cats nutro max chicken and all the other flavours..now i have them on science diet, and innova all natural. if i was a cat i would want a variety. i hear that science diet (regular kind not prescription..)is not good. it was the food that calmed my cats' stomachs. they were vomiting bile/liquids/ and had bad bad diarrhea. they i ran into paul's article, and immediately threw the nutro bags away for goooooooooood! nutro is never to be a food in my home again. i may find another one eventually but am so afraid of my animals dying!!! they are my children as i don't have any children.
Whitney, my you have a household! you are one busy gal! i hope nothing ever happens to your animals on account of the foods out there.
I'm curious what foods are everyone using? I for now am on Canidae and Felidae for the dogs and cats. HOwever I am not sure how long we're staying there...I am concerned with the reports of possible acetominophen in it but the reporst are so vague and not at all comprehensive or informative. The only thing I have noticed that matches the comments on consumer affairs is that at least Kiba is having some gas/burping a little bit. IF I see any vomiting or diarrhea you can be sure I'm off that food ASAP but we have a free bag or two saved up or almost saved up on both dog/cat and we're not in a financial situation to waste those. I will NOT be bothering with Nutro and all the cupons I have from when I was a seller with them are going in the garbage. That's at least two books of $2 off good thru end of this year but I won't encourage anyone anymore to buy Nutro, UGGHHHH same with Diamond I though I found something I can comfortable refer people that can't afford a good food too and now I find out they had this huge cover up. It's better then some other foods out there but GRRR I liked their Natural line's ingredients. Such a shame these companies are being this way!!
Aww thats too cute! My cats are all spoil sports they rarely amuse me is such ways as watching tv or the computer lol Whats your animal count? I have 2 dogs 1 is a 120lb wolfdog (14/ wolf, g shep, S Husky, & A Malamute) that's Kiba. There's Chloe a Cattle Dog (aka Queensland or blue Heeler) I was told that those have a little Dingo in them, and Jack Russell Terrier mix. I'm fostering hopefully found a home for Milenko a Chihuahua and Miniature Pincher Mix. I have 4 cats The Spotted ONe, Emily, Jim Beam, and Towlie (like off South Park). There are two ball pythons Bibby (named for the Sacramento Kings former player Mike Bibby) and Monty Python. Also assorted rats that our favorite is Zinger our hairless, some are strictly pets and some unfortunately must end up snake food. And there are 3 hampsters Sativa, Indica, and Mary Jane I rescued from the same people as Milenko. Oh and I almost forgot, a boyfriend!
Hi Whitney: As i was watching your video on the second one my cat was wondering where the barking was coming from and would you believe she was viewing the video too? Funny.

I'm a veterinary technician, animal lover, animal rescuer and pet nutriotion advocate. I am trying to keep up to date on what brands are having issues and I can tell you if the food your feeding is worth anything by reading the ingredients. Anything with corn (any type of corn even gluten) is CRAP. Anything with by products is CRAP. If your food doesn't start with a meat meal you need to think about changing products, what are you really feeding your pet? Ask me, I'll tell you.
